Street Spirit is a grassroots, independent newspaper produced and sold by unhoused and low-income vendors in the San Francisco East Bay, covering housing justice, community survival, and local governance.
Mentee Project: Swept Off The Map
- Swept Off The Map: A community data journalism and mapping project produced through direct data mentorship with Street Spirit.
- The project documents, visualizes, and maps municipal encampment sweeps across the Bay Area, providing interactive spatial evidence of displacement patterns, property confiscation, and public policy impacts.
Contributions & Mentorship
- Data Mentorship & Project Guidance: Mentored grassroots advocates and journalists in data collection methodologies, spatial mapping, cleaning public records, and quantitative verification for investigative stories.
- Municipal & Housing Data Analysis: Analyzed public records requests (PRA), municipal sweep logs, and shelter availability metrics to support evidence-based reporting.
- Accessible Tooling: Developed Python and spreadsheet automation workflows to clean, geocode, and structure messy municipal datasets for community reporting.
